Paul Winchester is very excited to continue his career as a church musician in the setting of UUCM. Over the past five years he worked in several Christian churches of varying denominations in northern Minnesota, central Ohio, and upstate New York. He held positions as a Music Minister, Worship Leader, Worship Accompanist, and Choral Section Leader and this will be his first full Music Director position. Paul was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota where he was a member of Peace United Church of Christ. While still a member of the United Church of Christ, over the past several years of writing and performing sacred music he felt his theology shifting towards Unitarian Universalism (although not necessarily knowing what to call it) and is excited for the opportunity to serve a community that shares those same ideals. In addition to his career as a church musician, Paul’s primary academic training is as a composer. He graduated from Syracuse University in June 2013 with his Master’s Degree in Composition and has since been working on various compositional projects, most recently a large-scale advent cantata for Peace UCC in Duluth that premiered in worship the weekend before Christmas this past December. Paul is also an active performer in both classical and popular styles. He performs as vocalist both in solo and choral capacities, currently singing with the group Hymnos in St. Paul. He also performs on most all of the fretted string instruments (guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, etc.) as well as keyboards and percussion. He is currently working in two bands in the area: Scarlet County and The Winchester and Weaver Family Band. If you wish to hear any of Paul’s compositional or performance work, samples can be found at www.paulwinchester.com. When not making music, Paul enjoys spending his time with his friends, most often either playing games (Paul is also an amateur game designer) or in discussion over various issues such as theology, politics, social equality, and the sort. He is very excited to bring what he has to offer to the UUCM community and looks forward not only to the work, but to the opportunity to join this vivacious, hospitable, and thoughtful community.
