A Little History
Our current building at 605 Rice Street, Wayzata
“Piety Hill,” where the Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka is located, has been home to a place of worship in Wayzata since the time of the Indians. UUCM has been the faithful steward of this historically important site in Wayzata since 1965. UUCM would like to celebrate its 50th anniversary of being part of the Wayzata community in a new location in the city.
1965: The fifty members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka (UUCM) vote to purchase the historic church building at 605 Rice Street in Wayzata.
2000: UUCM has close to 200 members and the building has become cramped and no longer meets UUCM’s needs. Physical expansion is not feasible at this site.
2006: The congregation votes to seek a new location and a Relocation Task Force (RTF) is formed.
2007: The RTF finds 2030 Wayzata Boulevard East in Wayzata less than two miles from UUCM’s current location. The parcel is large enough to accommodate the congregation for the next forty years, is on a beautiful wooded lot with wetlands, and next to a busy highway for easy access and good visibility. In the fall the congregation successfully completes a 1.5 million dollar capital campaign, anxious to make their dream a reality.
2008: UUCM’s application to rezone the property at 2030 Wayzata Blvd. E. was denied by the Wayzata City Council on a 3 to 2 vote. (See Wayzata City Council Meeting Minutes and Resolution).
